Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Trio in E flat major, K.498 ‘Kegelstatt’ for Clarinet, Viola, Piano
Mozart was an avid player of skittles, a game in which players aimed to hit nine pins with a wooden ball or disk.
This trio, nicknamed Kegelstatt (skittles), was written for clarinettist Anton Stadler, for whom the Concerto and Quintet were also dedicated, with Mozart himself playing the viola. The gently flowing Andante is aptly suited for the mellow tones of the clarinet and viola, in turn followed by the more exuberant minuet and rondo.
