Chamber Fridays² #5

Mendelssohn wrote thirteen symphonies for string orchestra aged 11 to 14, oeuvres intended to be performed on Saturday evenings in Berlin bourgeoisie homes.

The 7th Symphony, in classical form, is characterized by a strong contrast between the dramatic opening movement and the emotional second. The final Allegro foreruns the “saltarello” which the composer wrote in the Italian Symphony.
