noBody - a choreography by Sasha Waltz
From April 2nd to 13th 2020 the German dance company Sasha Waltz & Guests had planned to present a retrospective at the Volksbühne Berlin. The programme would have been kicked off with the revival of Sasha Waltz‘ choreography »noBody« from 2002, which has not been performed since 2008.
»noBody« completes a choreographic cycle of three pieces about humans and their bodies which Sasha Waltz created in the years around the turn of the millennium (»Körper«-Trilogy 2000-02). In her piece »Körper«, she investigated the materiality of the human being, relating the dancers‘ bodies to architecture, science and history. »S« searched for the origin of life, explored eros and sensibility. In »noBody« the choreographer and 25 dancers take on the challenge of visualizing the non-material and the idea of the spiritual beyond the body, thus questioning the mystery of human existence and death.
The filmic version of »noBody« was produced in 2000 by nachtaktivfilm, commissioned by ZDF/ARTE and is now on ARTE Concert (available for streaming worldwide) until 8 May.
