Recent Trends in Contemporary German Theater
Creative workshop by Ulrike Syha: “WHO AM I, THE AUTHOR?”- WRITING STRATEGIES AND CHALLENGES IN CONTEMPORARY THEATRE
The lecture will provide an overview of recent trends in German contemporary theatre (2010-2017), using both video and text-based examples. It will introduce influential voices from the fields of written drama, devised theatre, and other types of text production, offering insights into related debates. 1) Short Introduction: The Theatre Scene in Germany Historical reasons for its current shape; differences between the state-run theatres and the so-called independent scene; how both influence each other 2) Documentary Theatre: A huge Come-back Where documentary theatre derived from; some prominent examples; the role of interviews in the development of new plays 3) There is not only one Author: Collective Writing Strategies How to work in a group with several authors; influential examples of collective writing and devised theatre; a new direction: theatre work with amateurs in a professional context („Bürgerbühne“) 4) Rewrites and Adaptations Why we feel the need to „overwrite“ important texts from the past; the influence of film and novels on stage.
